Why measure volumes

On any earthworks job, the quantities drive the money: how much was dug, how much was brought in, and how much is still in the stockpile. An independent volume survey gives the contractor, client and quantity surveyor a figure everyone can agree on.

How it works

We survey the ground surface and build a 3D model, then compare it with a second surface: the original ground, the design formation level or a previous survey. The difference gives cut and fill volumes, reported with sections and contour plots so the numbers can be checked.

Ground and drone surveys

For smaller areas we survey with GNSS RTK. For large open sites and stockpiles, drone surveys capture the surface quickly without anyone walking on unstable material. Surveys are repeatable at agreed intervals, so progress and quantities can be tracked through the job, and we report volumes by material where the site holds more than one.

How it works

  1. Define what to measure

Agree the area, the comparison surface (original ground, design or a previous survey) and the reporting dates.

  2. Survey

We capture the surface with GNSS RTK, or by drone for large or unsafe areas.

  3. Calculate and report

Surfaces are modelled and compared, and volumes are reported with sections and plots.

Who we work with

  • Earthworks and groundworks contractors

Independent quantities for valuations and payment applications.

  • Civil engineers

Existing surfaces and volumes for earthworks design and balancing.

  • Quarries and material yards

Regular stockpile measurement for stock control.

We recently approached THS Concepts to carry out a level survey of the screed to the ground floor of a large residential property we were Project Managing. The property was undergoing extensions and refurbishment work. We had a tight timescale to receive the information, and THS Concepts delivered quickly and efficiently to meet our deadline. This is the second time we have used them and would highly recommend.

We have used THS Concepts for multiple surveys from topographic to drone photogrametry, they are professional and prompt and deliver exactly what is requested. Highly recommended.

Volume surveys: common questions

How are volumes calculated?

We build a 3D surface model from the survey and compare it with a second surface, such as the original ground, the design or an earlier survey. The difference between the two gives cut and fill.

Ground survey or drone?

Ground surveys suit smaller or vegetated areas. Drone capture is faster for large open sites and stockpiles nobody should climb. We often use both.

Can you account for bulking?

Volumes are reported as measured in place. Our earthwork bulking calculator converts them to loose volumes for haulage.
