Riverside aggregates wharf, Dagenham
Setting out a conveyor extension on a Thames jetty, plus repeat stockpile volume surveys and remote monitoring with alerts on a live industrial site.

The brief
A marine engineer appointed us to set out an extension to the conveyor at an aggregates wharf on the Thames. The extension sat on new support piles with prefabricated walkways, and the conveyor sections had to land on them accurately first time.
Setting out the conveyor
We established a GNSS RTK control network across the wharf and jetty, then set out the support piles, the walkways and the conveyor itself from it. The conveyor was installed to within 6mm of its design position, and the setting out was completed over four weeks.
Volume surveys and monitoring
Alongside the construction work, we carried out repeat volume surveys of the stockpiles, using GNSS RTK and drone capture, and reported volumes by material. We also installed automated sensors linked to our in-house dashboard, with alerts sent when readings passed agreed limits.
Site challenges
This is a live industrial site on the river. Large vessels and heavy plant worked around us throughout, and the tide and wind dictated when work on the jetty could go ahead. We planned each day around the tide tables and the wharf’s operations.
What the client received
Setting out records for the piles, walkways and conveyor, volume reports for each material, and access to the monitoring dashboard with alerts.
