Scanning on the move

Static laser scanners are set up at one position at a time. Our FARO Orbis SLAM scanner captures continuously as the operator walks, so a large building, tunnel or station can be recorded in a fraction of the time. When access windows are measured in hours, that speed is often what makes the survey possible.

Choosing the right method

SLAM picks up a lot more area much more quickly, at a slight reduction in accuracy compared with static scanning. That suits large-scale records, space planning and route checks. Where tighter accuracy is needed, we combine SLAM with static point cloud surveys and survey control, using each method where it suits best.

Typical uses

Tunnels and stations during short possessions, large commercial and industrial buildings, car parks, warehouses and whole estates where every floor needs recording.

How it works

  1. Plan the route

Agree the areas, access windows and the accuracy needed, and set control where the data must be tied to a grid.

  2. Walk and capture

The scanner captures continuously as the operator walks the route.

  3. Process and deliver

Data is processed, checked against control and delivered in your chosen format.

Who we work with

  • Infrastructure and rail teams

Fast capture of tunnels, platforms and plant during short possessions.

  • Estates and facilities teams

Whole-building records of large or multi-storey estates.

  • Contractors

Quick progress records across large active sites.

★★★★★

We have used THS Concepts for multiple surveys from topographic to drone photogrametry, they are professional and prompt and deliver exactly what is requested. Highly recommended.

We was looking for a local company to survey our setting out on our new build project and came across THS, We are VERY happy with the service they provided, Tom visited the site and was very helpful and professional. providing a detailed description and was very thorough. we will defiantly be using THS in the near future.

I contacted Tom to carry out a Topographic survey, and cannot recommend them enough. Nothing was to much, and I was kept up to date with everything as it happened! Great company to deal with and reasonably priced.

Mobile SLAM scanning: common questions

What is SLAM scanning?

Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping. The scanner works out its own position as it moves, building a point cloud continuously while the operator walks, instead of being set up at fixed positions.

How accurate is SLAM compared with static scanning?

SLAM picks up far more area in the same time, at a slight reduction in accuracy compared with static scanning. Where both speed and accuracy matter, we combine the two.

Which scanners do you use?

Our FARO range runs from the S70 static scanner to the FARO Orbis, a mobile SLAM scanner. We choose the scanner, or a mix of both, to suit the site and the accuracy needed.

Where is SLAM most useful?

Long or complex spaces with limited access time: tunnels, stations, car parks, warehouses, plant areas and large estates.
