THSC10 crack monitoring kit
Everything you need to monitor cracks in a house or building yourself: ten tell-tale gauges, shims for uneven walls, adhesive and fixings, plus our free spreadsheet to record the readings.

A tell-tale gauge fixes across a crack with one half on each side. As the crack opens, closes or slips, the two halves slide past each other and the scale shows the movement in millimetres, horizontally and vertically. Read them every few weeks and you build up a record that shows whether a crack is steady, seasonal or getting worse.
The kit is what we would want if we were monitoring our own house: enough gauges to cover every crack worth watching, shims so they sit flat on real walls, an adhesive that grips brick and render without a gun, and screws as a backup. Our guide to monitoring a crack walks through fitting and reading tell-tales step by step, and the free crack monitoring record sheet works out the movement and draws the charts for you.
When to call a professional
A kit is a good first step for hairline and fine cracks. If a crack is wider than about 5 mm, keeps widening over several readings, or doors and windows start to stick, get it looked at. Our crack monitoring service installs Demec studs or tell-tales, takes independent readings and reports for homeowners, insurers and structural engineers. For movement across a whole building, see structural monitoring, and for the warning signs to look out for, read signs of structural movement.
