Results come from the national planning dataset (planning.data.gov.uk), the Historic England National Heritage List and postcodes.io. Council data is added at different rates, so a "none found" is not proof there is no constraint. Always confirm with the local planning authority before relying on these results.
Planning constraints checker: common questions
Is the planning constraints checker free?
Yes. It is free to use with no registration. It queries publicly available national planning datasets and the Historic England National Heritage List for England.
Which areas does it cover?
England. The national planning dataset and the National Heritage List cover England only. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland keep their own registers.
How up to date is the data?
Historic England updates the National Heritage List daily. Councils add conservation areas, Article 4 directions and tree preservation orders to the national dataset at different rates, so coverage varies by area. Always confirm critical constraints with the local planning authority.
Do I need a survey for a listed building or conservation area application?
Usually, yes. Planning authorities generally expect accurate existing drawings for listed building consent and for works in conservation areas. See our listed building surveys and planning application surveys.
What is the grid reference used for?
The Ordnance Survey grid reference, easting and northing locate a site on OS mapping. They are used on planning forms, survey briefs and in CAD and GIS software. The values here are approximate and are not suitable as survey control.
Need a survey for this site?
Topographical and measured building surveys for planning applications, listed building consent and design. Fixed quotes within 24 hours.
