Setting Out Surveys - Client's Guide

In this article we explain what we require for a smooth setting out survey process.

Introduction

Every successful construction project begins with precise measurements and setting out.

At THS Concepts, we’ve seen firsthand how proper preparation can make the difference between a smooth, efficient site survey and one plagued with delays and complications.

Whether you’re planning a residential development or commercial construction, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know before our engineers arrive on site. Our sophisticated equipment can achieve millimeter-precision, but only when working with a well-prepared site and accurate documentation.

Site Preparation

Clear the site thoroughly before our arrival. Remove and clear away debris, vegetation, or obstructions that could hinder access or accuracy during the setting out process.

A clean workspace allows our engineers to work safely and precisely. It also allows us to place all the survey points. If we can’t access the location then we can’t add the setting out point!

Drawing Requirements

Please send all relevant setting out drawings at least 2 working days in advance of our arrival on site. Without enough time to process the drawings we may have to cancel the survey. We usually require the following drawings:

  • Setting out plans provided by your Architect or Structural Engineer in DWG CAD format.
  • Existing DWG CAD topographical surveys showing site control points.
  • If no topographical survey exists, we will need the building referenced to fixed objects such as fence lines, other buildings etc.

Email files to [email protected] with the job/site name or quote number clearly referenced.

Demarcation Method

Please consider how you would like us to mark out the required elements for setting out. If items are placed on the ground, think about whether they might be disturbed or moved by workers or equipment. You may need to protect the area following our survey.

We provide spray paint, flags, setting-out nails and timber pegs free of charge. For areas with soft ground, we can supply 600 mm steel rods; however, these are chargeable and must be requested before our arrival on-site.

Alternatively, you may supply your own rods if preferred. Please let us know your preferred method prior to our arrival.
