How To Calculate Brick / Block Quantities In a Wall

Use our calculators to work out how many bricks you require or are in an existing wall.

Article By: Tom Ayre | Last Update: October 2021

Sometimes during measured survey work, you often cannot measure elements such as walls due to access and safety issues. Often you only need an approximate measurement and can use photographs to count bricks to get an approximate length.

Other occasions you may have a wall and need to know how many bricks / blocks you need to order.

Using our free online brick length and height calculator you can:

  • Calculate total amount of bricks / blocks required in a wall.
  • Calculate total wall height / width based on counting bricks / blocks.

You can find the calculator below!

Typical Brick / Block Sizes

Blocks and bricks are produced in a range of different sizes. Use the following calculator to work out the approximate height or width of a brick course by counting bricks from a photo. Dimensions shown are in in millimetres (mm).

Calculate Total Bricks / Block Quantity

Use the following calculator to work out the total number of bricks you will need in a wall based on knowing:

  • Brick / Block Dimensions
  • Wall Width
  • Wall Length

Wall Width / Height Unknown

Use the following calculator to work out the approximate height or width of a wall by counting bricks from a photo.

Dimensions shown are in in millimetres (mm).

Example Hand Calculation

Brick height size: 65 mm
Brick Length: 215 mm
Mortar Size: 10 mm

Width Calculation
– No mortar at ends
Full width bricks = 7 no
Mortar gaps = 6 no
Width = (7 x 215) + (6 x 10) = 1565 mm

Height Calculation
– Mortar at each end
Full width bricks = 21 no
Mortar gaps = 22 no
Width = (21 x 65) + (22 x 10) = 1585 mm
