Sometimes during measured survey work, you often cannot measure elements such as walls due to access and safety issues. Often you only need an approximate measurement and can use photographs to count bricks to get an approximate length.

Blocks and bricks are produced in a range of different sizes. Use the following calculator to work out the approximate height or width of a brick course by counting bricks from a photo. Dimensions shown are in in millimetres (mm).

Width Calculation
– No mortar at ends
Full width bricks = 7 no
Mortar gaps = 6 no
Width = (7 x 215) + (6 x 10) = 1565 mm
Height Calculation
– Mortar at each end
Full width bricks = 21 no
Mortar gaps = 22 no
Width = (21 x 65) + (22 x 10) = 1585 mm
